Medications to stop prior to Allergy Skin Testing
Very Important! Please Read!
Specific Medications
The following is a list of medications that needs to be stopped before skin testing in order to obtain accurate results. We understand that some of these may be difficult to stop. If you have concerns about stopping any of the following medications please discuss this with your physician’s office and let us know.
If you are on an allergy medication and do not see it on the list please call our office to be sure it is okay to continue taking it.
Medications to STOP 14 days prior to testing:
- Prednisone (chronic use)
Chronic use = >10mg/day for more than 2 weeks.
Ask your MD how to taper off, if possible.
If not chronic use – no need to go off of it.
Medications to STOP 7-14 days prior to Testing*:
- Amitryptyline (Elavil)
- Clomipramine (Anafranil)
- Doxepin (Sinequnan)
- Imipramine (Tofranil)
- Trimipramine (Surmontil)
- Amoxapine (Asendin)
- Desipramine (Nupramin)
- Nortiptyline (Pamelor, Aventyl)
- Protriptyline (Vivactil)
- Maprotiline (Ludiomil)
- Mirtazapine (Remeron)
- Trazadone (Desyrel)
- Nefazadone (Serzone)
- Astelin (Azelastin)/Astepro
- Dymista Patanase (Olopatidine)
*Please consult with your physician before stopping any of these medications if you take them on a regular basis.
Medications to STOP 5 days prior to Testing:
- Allegra (Fexofenadine)
- Claritin (Loratidine)
- Clarinex (Desloratidine)
- Periactin (Cyproheptadine)
- Quercetin
Medications to STOP 3-4 days prior to Testing:
- All allergy eye drops OTC and prescription
- Zyrtec (Cetirazine)
- Benadryl (Diphenhydramine)
- Xyzal (Levocetirazine)
- Nasal sprays with azelastine or olopatadine (Astelin, Astepro, Patanase, Dymista)
- Actifed, Dimetapp (Brompheniramine)
- Atarax, Vistaril (Hydroxyzine)
- Chlortrimetron (Chlorpheniramine)
- Dexchlorpheniamine (Polaramine)
- Phenergan (Promenthazine)
- Vitamin C
- Compazine (Prochlorperazine)
- Tylenol PM
- Advil PM
- Tavist, Antihist (Clemastine)
- Nettle (herbal medication)
Medications to STOP the day before Testing
- Singulair (Montelukast)
- Zyflo (Zileuton)
- Accolate (Zafirleukast)
- Reglan (Metoclopramide)
- Prevacid
- Ranitidine (Zantac)
- Cimetidine (Tagamet)
- Famotidine (Pepcid) & Pepcid Complete
- Nizatidine (Axid)

- Protonix
- Prilosec (Omeprazole)
- Nexium
- Omeprazole
- Kapidex
- Aciphex
- Zegerid
- Dexilant (dexlansoprazole)
As a general rule all oral allergy, cold and sinus medications need to be stopped 5 days prior to skin testing. This includes over the counter medications and herbal supplements.
Other classes of medications that may interfere with skin testing:
- Sleep Medications (e.g., Tylenol PM)
- Tricyclic Anti-Depressants
- Anti-Anxiety Medications
- Stomach Acid Medications
It is okay to continue the following medications:
- Asthma Inhalers
- Pseudoephedrine
- Guaifenesin
- Dextromethorphan
- Nasal Sprays (Except Astelin, Patanase, Astepro, Dymista)
- Antibiotics
- Oral Contraceptives

Carter Bobbitt MD
Dr. Bobbitt is originally from Cincinnati, OH. He completed his undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt University. He then went on to graduate from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colorado and his fellowship in Adult and Pediatric Allergy & Immunology at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Bobbitt has been practicing Allergy and Immunology since 2004. He loves the impact that this specialty has on patients’ quality of life. Over the course of his career Dr. Bobbitt has also spent extensive time on the mission field, serving medically in Central America, South America, and Africa. Both professionally and personally, Dr. Bobbitt’s life is guided by faith. He is an active member at Maplegate Christian Fellowship. When he’s not practicing medicine, Dr. Bobbitt enjoys spending time with his family. The Bobbitts love playing sports together. They get really competitive with one another at pickleball, tennis, backyard kickball, and a card game called “Golf”. He also loves working on their land which was once an old scout camp.
